"How might we make our community assessment report more engaging?"

Between 2021 and 2023, See Chicago Dance collaborated with the Chicago DCASE and LimeRed in conducting a community needs assessment within the Chicago dance community. It was both a quantitative and qualitative research project in which I was the primary director of research.

After my departure from LimeRed as Principle Director of Design Strategy, See Chicago Dance wanted to continue the work and explore more innovative ways to report back to the community its findings from the research. The primary challenge was how to sustain engagement with the dance community beyond the release of a report.

Solution

The continued collaboration with See Chicago Dance, along with COVE Chicago and Polyrhythmic explored the possibility of turning the report into a narrative podcast, focusing on the voices, stories, and experiences of dancers themselves. The result was further interviews with six dancers to give context to the research, with analysis written by Angelina Perino of COVE and the narrative script written by Kennedy Ward. My role continued as production director, all in all delivering 10 episodes that included original music and sound scoring by Polyrhythmic.

Media Production

Most interviews were conducted at the Polyrhythmic studio where they were edited by the collaborative team and finalized in post production by Polyrhythmic.

Several musical compositions were written for the podcast with the theme song published along with the final episodes.

A final hour-long documentary was produced and then edited into shorter episodes for drip campaign releases to engage with the community on each of the specific topics.

Polyrhythmic produced all of the final episodes and currently hosts the podcast on Transistor.fm.

Graphic Design

To help with the hosting and promotion of the podcast, Polyrhythmic designed a series of marketing assets and templates See Chicago Dance could use on its social and other digital marketing channels to engage the community.

All photos in the graphics design were provided by dancers and not produced by Polyrhythmic.
